Client Brief

The client brief was to create a garden at the front of the house that would provide kerb appeal and a family garden at the back.

Garden Design - Back Garden

The back garden was a blank canvas. It included a hill of builder's rubble skimmed with 100mm of top soil - okay I exaggerate but it's not far from the truth. The hill ran across the garden and included the stumps of nine Leylandii trees. The whole area was infested with bindweed and was a complete waste of space that could not be used. A lawn ran from side to side and a very small patio bordered the house. The garden was very static with no movement and nothing to draw you into the space.BeforeThe garden has a southern aspect with a clay soil. There were no plants or shrubs only lawn.

Client Brief - Front Garden

The front garden was simply over planted with shrubs originally selected by the developer. The space was poorly defined and a hebe hedge ran down the centre of the lawn cutting the plot in two. The space had no definition. Our client's brief was to create a low maintenance garden with kerb appeal. Before

Garden Design

Back Garden

The garden design maximises the amount of lawn but provides ample border space to grow large shrubs that will provide the privacy required in the few areas that the garden is overlooked. Colourful low maintenance shrubs have been selected to create areas of dense planting that will eventually block the view down the garden creating a sense of mystery. The semi-circular Indian stone patio provides a dynamic entrance with access to fragrant planting and a great place to dine. Grape vines and a climbing hydrangea will soften the harshness of the house - providing it with character. The slate paths provide movement winding past informal lavander hedges that tie the borders together. The top path winds towards a circular deck through borders of vibrant crocosmia and daffodils- an area reclaimed by removing and re-shaping the hill.
This lovely late evening seating area is surrounded by plants including fragrant lilacs. The hill has been planted with a prarie planting scheme with drifts of grasses and achellia that will get better year on year. Plants have been selected to cope with the harsh conditions on the hill.

Front Garden

The front garden combines a contemporary arc of daffodils with a classic box hedged border planted with alliums and daffodils. The front and the back are tied together with a common use of slate and Indian stone. The choisya ternata 'Sundance' has been re-used to create an informal hedge.
The hebe hedge was removed and the lawn re-instated allowing the space to be re-defined. The existing tree is now a beautiful focal point mulched with slate. A simple but elegant design
