Client Brief
The original garden lacked purpose and definition. Half the garden was wooded and the other half traditional lawn. They are seperated by a pinkish tarmac drive that cuts the plot in two. There is little privacy from the gate as your eyes follow the drive straight to the house. Neither side had a sense of place, journey, mystery or plants!.
Garden Design
The solution was to create two seperate gardens but to link them by common planting. The wooded side was transformed into a meandering walk along a gravel path through the trees. The path crosses a contemporary metal grid bridge underplanted with ferns and ends at a circular patio surrouned by a dry stone wall. The planting is mostly naturalistic and was inspired by Beth Chatto's Woodland Garden. The lawned area has been reshaped to provide traditional borders. The mixed borders host a range of colourful shrubs, trees and perrenials. The shape of the garden obscures the border when viewed from the house adding mystery and a desire to explore. The view from the gate has been improved by adding two ghostly multi-stemmed Himalayan Birch trees unerplanted with seasonal and evergreen plants. Your eye is now distracted away from the house providing greater privacy as well as looking drop dead gorgeous!
